What Does a Sign Board Cost in Chennai?

Almost every signage quotation in Chennai is built the same way: a rate per square foot, multiplied by the size of the board. The trouble is that two suppliers can quote the same rate for boards that will not last the same number of years. This guide explains what sits behind the number so you can read a quotation properly.

How the square-foot rate is calculated

The area used is the finished board — its length multiplied by its height — not the area of the lettering. A board 10 feet wide and 3 feet high is 30 square feet, whether it carries four letters or fourteen.

Very small boards are often quoted as a lump sum instead. Below roughly 15 square feet, the fixed costs of a job — design time, transport, sending an installation team, the minimum sheet you have to buy — stop scaling down with the size, so a strict per-square-foot rate would under-price the work.

The five things that actually move the price

1. Board material and grade

This is the largest single variable. Flex is the cheapest and the shortest-lived. ACP sits in the middle and covers most shop fronts. Acrylic costs more and looks it. Within ACP alone the spread is wide: panel thickness, the thickness of the aluminium skin on each face, and whether the coating is PVDF or polyester all change the rate. A 0.5 mm aluminium skin and a 0.21 mm skin are both sold as "ACP".

2. Letter type

Vinyl lettering cut and applied to a flat board is the cheapest option. Flat acrylic letters cost more. Three-dimensional acrylic letters with LED modules inside cost more again, and fabricated metal channel letters more still — each one is a small assembled box rather than a cut shape. Lettering frequently costs more than the board it sits on.

3. Illumination

Lighting adds LED modules, power supplies, wiring and depth to the board. It also adds the component most likely to determine how long the sign lasts. Branded LED modules with a correctly rated power supply cost noticeably more than generic ones, and the difference does not show at handover — it shows in year three.

4. Framework and mounting

The hidden cost, and the one most worth paying for. Every board sits on a structure. Untreated mild steel is cheapest; galvanised sections cost more and are the reason a board still looks clean after five monsoons instead of streaking rust down the front. Height matters too — anything needing a lift or scaffolding adds real cost that has nothing to do with the board itself.

5. Site conditions

Whether an old board has to come down and be disposed of. Whether the wall behind needs repair. Whether there is a power point near the board or a new line has to be run. Whether the frontage is on a busy road where installation has to happen at night. None of these are visible in a rate per square foot, and all of them are real.

How to compare two quotations fairly

A single figure on a letterhead cannot be compared with anything. Ask both suppliers to break the quotation into the same five lines:

• Board — material, brand, panel thickness and aluminium skin thickness
• Letters — type, material, thickness, and finish
• Lighting — LED make, module count, power supply rating and warranty
• Framework — material and treatment, and how it fixes to the building
• Installation — including access equipment, electrical connection and removal of the old board

Once those five lines exist side by side, the cheaper quote is usually cheaper for a reason you can point at. Sometimes that reason is acceptable. Often it is a mild steel frame, or a power supply with no headroom, and you are looking at the same board with three fewer years in it.

What is often excluded

Worth asking about explicitly rather than assuming, because these are the items that turn a settled price into a revised one:

• The electrical point supplying the board, and any wiring back to your meter
• Civil work — wall repair, plastering, or making good after an old board is removed
• Access equipment for high-level installation
• Municipal advertisement licence fees, where these apply to your board
• GST
• Design revisions beyond an agreed number

Where it is worth spending more

If a budget has to be cut, cut it in the right place. The parts of a sign board that are cheap to upgrade now and expensive to fix later are all invisible: the framework, the power supply, the sealing and the quality of the LED modules. The parts that are easy to change later are the visible ones — a face can be re-skinned, letters can be replaced individually.

The most common expensive mistake we are called out to is not a board that looks wrong. It is a board that was built on an untreated frame and now has to be taken down entirely, three years in, so that the frame can be replaced.
