When a Sign Has to Look Permanent
Acrylic is the right answer for most shop fronts. But for a corporate office, a bank, a jewellery showroom or a building entrance, steel says something acrylic cannot: that the business intends to be there for a long time.
Steel also outlasts everything else we work with. Plastics eventually yellow and grow brittle under Chennai sun; a properly specified stainless letter simply does not change. That is why steel is the default for facades and reception walls that are expected to be left alone for a decade.

Grade Matters More in Chennai Than Most Places
"Stainless" is not one material, and near the coast the difference shows within a couple of years. This is the single most useful thing to understand before comparing quotes.
SS 304 — our standard
The right choice for the great majority of sites across Chennai: interior work, and exterior signage inland from the coast. Holds its finish well and is the usual specification for offices, showrooms and reception areas.
SS 316 — for coastal sites
Contains molybdenum, which resists the chloride in salt-laden air. If your building is near the sea — Besant Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, the ECR stretch — 316 is worth the extra. On those sites 304 will eventually show small rust-coloured pits, and once that starts it cannot be polished out permanently.
The fixings matter too
A stainless letter mounted on mild steel studs will still stain the wall beneath it, because the fixing rusts and bleeds down the facade. We use stainless studs and stand-offs throughout. It is a small cost that prevents a very visible problem.

Lighting Steel Letters
Steel is opaque, so it cannot glow through the face the way acrylic does. There are two ways to light it, and they look completely different at night.
Halo / back-lit
LEDs sit behind each letter on stand-offs, throwing light onto the wall so the letters read as dark silhouettes inside a soft glow. This is the premium look — used on most corporate and hotel facades — and it hides the light source entirely.
Face-lit combination
A steel return with an acrylic face, so the letter face itself lights up while the sides stay metal. Brighter and more readable at a distance, which suits retail more than corporate.
Non-lit steel letters remain a legitimate choice for entrances and reception walls that are only seen during the day, and they cost considerably less.
How Steel Letters Are Fixed
Mounting is where a metal letter job is won or lost. Badly fitted letters go crooked, or mark the wall, or come loose in the first heavy monsoon.
- Stud mounting — threaded rods into the wall, letters sitting flush
- Stand-off mounting — letters held clear of the wall, creating a shadow line
- Backing plate — the whole set fixed to one hidden plate, so alignment cannot drift
- Template installation — a full-size drilling template so spacing matches the approved artwork exactly

What finishes are available?
Brushed (hairline) stainless steel, mirror polish, gold and rose-gold PVD coatings, and powder coating in any colour. Brushed steel is the most practical outdoors — it hides fingerprints and water marks that show badly on mirror finishes.

Yes. The most popular version is halo-lit: the letter face is solid steel and LEDs behind it cast a glow onto the wall, so the letters read as silhouettes at night. Face-lit versions combine a steel return with an acrylic face.
Will steel letters rust in Chennai's coastal air?
Grade matters near the coast. We use 304 stainless as standard and recommend 316 for sites close to the sea, where chloride in the air will pit lower grades over time. Fixings are stainless too, since a rusting screw will stain the wall below.
