Cast or Extruded Acrylic?

Acrylic comes in two forms, and the difference decides how your sign looks after laser cutting and how it ages.

Cast acrylic is what we use for signage. It laser cuts to a genuinely polished, glass-clear edge, holds colour under UV, and does not craze. Extruded acrylic is cheaper but cuts with a slightly frosted, sometimes tacky edge, and is more prone to stress cracks around drilled fixing holes.

On a sign where the edge of every letter is on display at eye level, that edge quality is most of what you are paying for — so we quote cast as standard rather than treating it as an upgrade.

Thicknesses We Use

• 3 mm — flat name plates and door signs
• 5–8 mm — reception logos and premium name plates with a visible edge
• 10–12 mm — chunky 3D lettering where depth is the point
• Layered — separate sheets stacked on stand-offs for a floating effect

Finish Options

• Clear — glass-like, usually mounted on stand-offs so it casts a shadow
• Solid colour — coloured through the sheet, so a scratch does not show white
• Frosted — soft, matt finish that hides fingerprints; common in clinics
• Mirror acrylic — gold or silver, lighter and safer than real mirror
• Printed backing — full-colour graphics behind clear acrylic for depth
• Metal-look laminate — brushed steel appearance at a fraction of the weight and cost

Mounting Methods

How a plate is fixed changes its whole character. Stand-off bolts lift the acrylic clear of the wall so it casts a shadow line — the reception look most offices ask for. Direct adhesive mounting sits flush and is neater for door plates. For letters, we use a drilling template so spacing matches the approved artwork exactly rather than being eyeballed on site.

Where Acrylic Is the Right Choice

Acrylic suits interiors and sheltered exteriors where a refined finish matters more than brute durability. Reception areas and logo walls, clinic and consulting room plates, boutique and jewellery interiors, café menu boards, cabin and department nameplates, mall unit signage, and exhibition graphics.

For a fully exposed outdoor shop front taking direct sun and monsoon rain all year, an ACP board with acrylic letters mounted on it is usually the better structure — you get the acrylic look with a base built for weather.

Looking After Acrylic

Acrylic is easy to maintain and easy to damage with the wrong cleaner. A soft damp cloth is all it needs.

• Avoid solvent cleaners — anything containing ammonia or alcohol will craze the surface into fine cracks
• No dry wiping — dust is abrasive and a dry cloth grinds it into the surface
• Soft cloth only — scouring pads leave permanent scratches

Done properly, an interior acrylic sign looks new for a decade. Most acrylic signage we are asked to replace has been cleaned with glass cleaner, not worn out.
